English Learners
English learner (EL) students are entitled to appropriate language assistance services to become proficient in English and to participate equally in the standard instructional program offered at the school district. Language assistance services within the Chagrin Falls School District utilize several approaches, including:
Content-based English as a Second Language (ESL) classes/tutoring
Inclusion instruction
ESL English course for high school credit
Response to Intervention (prescribed intervention to address specific deficits)
Programs are effectively implemented by highly qualified teachers, support staff, and a Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The program focus is to support students in their ability to speak, read, listen, and write in English and follow the English Language Proficiency standards. The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is scientifically supported and endorsed by the Center for Applied Linguistics and is the method we use to teach content instruction. A wide range of provided resources effectively help meet the needs of ELs including Read, Write for Google, Rosetta Stone, BrainPOP ESL, BrainPOP Jr., BrainPOP, Instant Translate; Merriam Webster Learner’s Dictionary, Collins Learner’s Dictionary, Fluency Tutor, RAZ-Kids, 1:1 Chromebook, and a variety of Chromebook apps and extensions.
